Matheesha Pathirana is yet to play a single game in IPL 2026 for KKR.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are slowly finding their rhythm in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season. After a poor start, the team has bounced back with two important wins. However, one big question still remains around their playing XI. Fans are eagerly waiting to see Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana in action.
KKR spent a huge Rs 18 crore to sign Pathirana in the IPL 2026 auction. But the young fast bowler has not played a single match yet this season. He joined the squad late after recovering from a hamstring injury he suffered during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
The team has managed to win matches without him. Still, many believe his presence can strengthen the bowling attack. As KKR prepare to face Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Sunday, May 03, all eyes are on whether Pathirana will finally get his chance.
Will Matheesha Pathirana play in KKR vs SRH game of IPL 2026?

KKR’s bowling coach Tim Southee has given an update on Pathirana. But he did not clearly confirm if the pacer will play against SRH.
“Yes, he (Pathirana) has arrived. He’s been around the group for a little bit now,” Southee said at the pre-match press conference.
“We’ll look at conditions and make a decision on the side that we think is best for tomorrow’s game. He’s been bowling well at training, and it’s great to have him a part of the side,” Southee added.
This shows that the final decision will depend on pitch conditions and team balance. KKR have been using their overseas slots carefully. Players like Sunil Narine and Cameron Green have performed well. But others like Tim Seifert and Rovman Powell have struggled with the bat.
This could open the door for Pathirana. KKR have not used a frontline overseas pacer in recent matches. His unique action and specialised style in death overs can add value to the team.
Captain Ajinkya Rahane will likely take a final call after assessing the pitch in Hyderabad. If the surface supports pace, Pathirana may finally make his debut for KKR. For now, fans will have to wait until toss time for confirmation.
Why has Matheesha Pathirana not played IPL 2026 yet?
He joined late after injury and team is managing combinations.
How many matches are left for KKR?
KKR have 6 matches remaining.
