Matheesha Pathirana registered his best bowling figures in the IPL – 4/28 against MI on Sunday.

The biggest rivalry in the Indian Premier League (IPL) produced another thrilling encounter on Sunday. Mumbai Indians (MI) took on Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Wankhede Stadium in match No. 29 of the IPL 2024. MI won the toss and decided to bowl first. CSK posted a big total of 206, courtesy of a brilliant cameo from MS Dhoni, who came out to bat when four balls were left and smashed three sixes.

Dhoni’s 4-ball 20 not out helped his team reach a good total, which ended as a winning one for the defending champions. CSK ended up winning the game by 20 runs and registered their fourth win of the IPL 2024. This win has helped Chennai solidify their position in the top three, while MI suffered their fourth defeat.

It was not an easy target to defend against a strong batting line-up of Mumbai Indians. And both MI openers also started in an aggressive manner. Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan (23 off 15) added 70 runs for the opening wicket in just 7 overs. But Matheesha Patirana gave CSK the first breakthrough. He followed it up with another wicket as he dismissed Suryakumar Yadav for a two-ball duck in the same over.

Eventually, Matheesha Pathirana took two more wickets. He dismissed Tilak Varma and the dangerous Romario Shepherd to put CSK on top. The wicket of Sherpard was a dream ball for any pacer. Pathirana bowled a sheering Yorker that crashed on to the stumps, and the batter didn’t have any clue about it. The wicket totally put MI out of the chase.

Matheesha Patirana ended up with figures of 4/28 – his best in the IPL. MI reached a total of 186/6 and fell short by 20 runs. Rohit Sharma struck his second IPL century off 61 balls; there was too much left to do in the final overs. The former MI skipper remained unbeaten on 105 runs off 63 balls, including 11 fours and five sixes, but it came in a losing cause.
