Australian wicket-keeper batter Matthew Wade announced his retirement from international cricket on October 29, 2024. The announcement marks an end to a resilient and highly impactful career which spanned over 13 years.

Wade made his debut for Australia against South Africa in a T20I game at Cape Town in October 2011. Nicknamed “Wadey,” the former Australian wicket-keeper played across all formats for Australia. Over his career, he earned a reputation of being a tough competitor.

Matthew Wade’s international career with bat

Wade represented Australia in 225 international games which consisted of 36 tests, 97 ODIs and 92 T20Is. Wade was well known in the Australian circuit for dominating the bowlers with his aggressive batting style.

Wade scored 4,682 runs across formats which included five centuries in international cricket. Wade achieved the peak of his batting excellence during the 2019 away Ashes series, where he silenced the critics by scoring two magnificent hundreds at Edgbaston and The Oval.

Another standout performance performance for Wade came during the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup semi-final against Pakistan, where his blistering 41* off 17 balls led Australia to victory.

Wade’s batting numbers across format:

Test – 1613 runs in 63 innings with a batting average of 29.87

ODI – 1867 runs in 83 innings with a batting average of 26.29

T20I – 1202 runs in 68 innings with a batting average of 26.13.

Matthew Wade’s international career with as wicket-keeper

As wicket-keeper, Wade brought versatility to the Aussie lineup. Wade registered over 266 dismissals across his international career, including 233 catches and 33 stumpings.

Throughout his career, however, Wade’s wicket-keeping skills often came under scrutiny. One notable instance was ahead of the 2017-18 Ashes series in Australia when he was dropped in favour of his Tasmanian teammate Tim Paine.

Test – 85 dismissals, 74 catches and 11 stumpings.

ODI – 117 dismissals, 108 catches and 9 stumpings

T20I – 64 dismissals, 58 catches and 6 stumpings.
