Matthew Wade scored 17* runs against England in the AUS vs ENG T20 World Cup 2024 match.

On June 10, 2024, Australian wicket-keeper Matthew Wade was handed one demerit point by the International Cricket Council (ICC) at the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

The Mitchell Marsh-led Australia have had a terrific start to their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign. The Aussies have won two out of two matches.

In their first Group B match against Oman, they emerged victorious by 39 runs. The side then defeated defending champions England by 36 runs. They will next face Namibia on June 12. A win will seal their spot in the Super 8 round.

Australian wicket-keeper Wade scored 17 valuable runs against England during the match on June 8.

Why was Matthew Wade handed one demerit point at T20 World Cup 2024?

In the high-voltage clash against England, Matthew Wade had a heated argument with umpire Nitin Menon. The incident happened during the 18th over, bowled by leg-spinner Adil Rashid.

Wade backed away to the leg side as Rashid was about to deliver the ball. Rashid sent down the ball and Wade dead-batted it back to the bowler with no intention of scoring runs. It was revealed later that Wade was disturbed by the music at the ground.

Umpire Menon didn’t give it as a dead ball which angered Wade. The Aussie then had a heated argument with Menon. The Australian wicket-keeper also exchanged a few words with England skipper Jos Buttler.

In the latest development, the apex body of cricket has handed Wade an ‘official reprimand’ for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct.

“Australia’s Matthew Wade has been handed an official reprimand for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct,” an ICC statement read.

In addition, Wade was also slapped with one demerit point for his actions against umpire Nitin Menon. The wicket-keeper batter has accepted the sanction, so there is no need of a hearing for this.

“The wicket-keeper batter was found in breach of Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “showing dissent at an Umpire’s decision during an International Match,” the statement added.
