Mehidy Hasan Miraz will lead Bangladesh in ODI series against Sri Lanka next month.
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), on Thursday, June 12, appointed Mehidy Hasan Miraz as the new skipper of Bangladesh’s ODI side. The 27-year-old player will replace Najmul Hossain Shanto in the role. However, the latter will remain the test captain of the Bangladesh Cricket Team.
As a result, Bangladesh now have three different captains across each format. While Miraz and Shanto have the reins of the ODIs and tests respectively, Litton Das is the captain of the T20I side. The all-rounder has been handed the ODI captaincy for a 12-month term by the BCB.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz will commence his role as captain in the forthcoming ODI series against the Sri Lanka Cricket Team next month. The two teams will be playing each other in the multi-format series, starting June 17, which comprises of two tests, three ODIs, and three T20Is. The 50-over games are scheduled to be played from July 2 to July 8.
It’s a huge honour- Mehidy Hasan Miraz on becoming ODI captain
After being appointed as the new ODI captain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz called it a huge honour and thanked the BCB for handing him the responsibility.
“It is a huge honour for me to be entrusted with this responsibility by the board. Leading the country is a dream for any cricketer, and I am grateful for the confidence the board has shown in me,” he was quoted as saying by ESPN Cricinfo.
“I have every faith in this team. We have the talent and the belief to play fearless cricket. I want us to perform with confidence, play without inhibition and continue giving our best for the country,” the bowling all-rounder further added.
Notably, Mehidy also led Bangladesh in four ODI games in the absence of Shanto against Afghanistan and the West Indies last year. However, it wasn’t a fruitful stint for him as the team lost all four games under his leadership.
He is a highly experienced player in ODI cricket with 105 games under his belt. He has slammed 1617 runs in 76 innings so far to go with two tons and six fifties. With the ball, Miraz has captured 110 wickets at an average of 36.92.
