Seven out of the eight teams in the BBL have won at least one title in history.

Started in December 2011, the famous Australian T20 series, the Big Bash League (BBL), has completed 15 seasons, with the most recent one concluding earlier this year in January. Seen as one of the biggest T20 leagues in the world, the BBL has established a strong reputation among fans.

Eight teams have participated in the tournament since its inception, with the Perth Scorchers being the most successful, having won six titles. The Scorchers won their sixth title last season after they defeated two-time champions, the Sydney Sixers, in the summit clash.

After 15 seasons, the tournament is set to undergo a few major changes. Speculation about introducing new teams from Canberra, Geelong, the Gold Coast, or New Zealand alongside full privatisation is reportedly underway.

Moreover, according to reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reached an agreement with Cricket Australia for the 2026-27 season opener to be played at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. And now, two BBL teams are set to merge.

BBL sides Melbourne Stars and Renegades set to be merged

The Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades are set to merge into a single franchise and play the Big Bash League under a new name from next season. Cricket Victoria’s board has confirmed that it will sell the franchise licence of its second BBL side to a private investor.

If the private investor fails to acquire the franchise, the Renegades will play under a caretaker administration next season, as the proposed W/BBL privatisation model is set to come into effect in 2027-28. Moreover, the Renegades can play under the existing banner for one more season if a full sale does not take place, but under a caretaker administration.

According to reports, players were informed of the decision via individual phone calls. The name ‘Stars’ will be discontinued, and the team colours will also be abandoned; however, the team’s home stadium will remain the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

Meanwhile, a new nickname for the team will be decided by Cricket Victoria (CV), while the team is expected to wear Victoria’s navy blue colours.

Renegades General Manager James Rosengarten will run the new team. Interestingly, CV are likely to sell their second Melbourne franchise to an IPL owner, while the Sun Group and Reliance Industries have also expressed interest in a potential buyout.
