Top 5 most memorable spells by Ravichandran Ashwin in the IPL

Ravichandran Ashwin retired as the fifth-highest wicket-taker in the Indian Premier League (IPL)

On Wednesday, Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL). It put an end to a 17-year-long successful career, which saw many ups and downs. He represented five franchises in his career.

His stint with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) was the most successful one, and he also won the IPL twice with the franchise in 2010 and 2011. He retired as the fifth-highest wicket-taker in IPL history.

Over the years, he has recorded some game-changing spells, which has helped his team get a win. In this article, we will relive his top five bowling spells in the IPL.

List of Top 5 most memorable spells by Ravichandran Ashwin in the IPL

1. 3/16 vs RCB, IPL 2011 Final

Ravichandran Ashwin’s magical spell in the IPL 2011 final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) was one key reason that CSK won their second title. RCB had to chase 206 to win the final, and they had a very strong batting unit. MS Dhoni came up with a masterstroke and brought Ashwin in the powerplay. The move paid off as the off-spinner dismissed Chris Gayle for a duck and Mayank Agarwal (10) to give them a good start. He finished with 3/16 in his four overs and helped CSK restrict RCB to 147/8 to win the title.

2. 3/23 vs DC, IPL 2012 Qualifier 2

Another important Ashwin spell in an IPL knockout was recorded in the second qualifier of IPL 2012 against Delhi Capitals in Chennai. CSK needed this win to qualify for the final, and they had a good score of 225/5 on the board. Ashwin bowled tightly and kept the pressure on. He dismissed Mahela Jayawardene, Andre Russell, and Umesh Yadav and took 3/23 in 3.5 overs to take his team over the line.

3. 2/19 vs RCB, IPL 2024 Eliminator

Another knockout performance for Ashwin came in the IPL 2024 Eliminator against RCB. He was playing for the Rajasthan Royals (RR) and won the Player of the Match award for his 2/19 in four overs. RCB were looking good at 97/2 when Ashwin dismissed Cameron Green and Glenn Maxwell on consecutive balls to break the momentum eventually.

4. 4/34 vs PBKS , IPL 2016

Playing for now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiants in the IPL 2016, Ashwin recorded his best bowling figures in the IPL against Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in Vizag. PBKS were 122/2 but only managed 172/7 in the 20 overs. Ashwin dismissed four of the top five batters and took 4/34 in his spell, which helped his team win a tight match.

5. 2/13 vs Punjab, IPL 2009

The second-lowest title defended in the IPL,116/9, was by CSK in Durban during IPL 2009. In that game, Ashwin played a major role. Batting first, CSK only scored 116/9, and they needed a good bowling effort. That is when Ashwin led the way and took 2/13 in his four overs, including the prized wicket of Kumar Sangakkara. Punjab only scored 92/8 and lost the game.
