Michael Hussey has been part of CSK’s coaching staff for a while now.

Former New Zealand batter Stephen Fleming was appointed as the head coach of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in 2009, soon after he retired as a player. Fleming was a major factor behind the side’s success in the biggest T20 league in the world. Under the former Black Caps player, CSK won five IPL and two Champions League T20 titles, becoming one of the most successful teams in franchise cricket.

However, Stephen Fleming stepped down from his position earlier this year, in July. In a statement released later, it was revealed that the franchise and the coach had mutually decided to part ways. With that, he also ended his ties with the other two Super Kings franchises, Joburg Super Kings (SA20) and Texas Super Kings (MLC).

The announcement came only a few hours after the Texas Super Kings concluded their Major League Cricket campaign in last place in the group stage. Playing in the SA20, Joburg Super Kings have also failed to attain significant success in the last four seasons.

Meanwhile, Stephen Fleming’s future as the franchise’s head coach was already under scrutiny after they had failed to win a title in the last three IPL campaigns. Speaking of the current, CSK are without a head coach, while Michael Hussey and Eric Simons continue to serve as the batting and bowling coaches, respectively.

According to Rohit Juglan of Revsportz, Australian cricket icon Michael Hussey is currently the frontrunner to become the new coach of the five-time IPL Champions Chennai Super Kings. Hussey has been Chennai’s batting coach since long.

The former Australian batter enjoyed a great relationship with CSK, having played for the five-time champions from 2008 to 2013 and again in 2015.

Meanwhile, former Indian player Hemang Badani is also reportedly in the race to become the new coach of the Super Kings. Badani also has experience working with teams in IPL.

He was the fielding and batting coach of the Sunrisers Hyderabad between 2021 and 2023. Later, he was also appointed as the head coach of Delhi Capitals ahead of the 2025 season. Hemang Badani also coaches the Southern Brave Men’s team in The Hundred. However, fans might have to wait a little longer to find out who Stephan Fleming’s successor will be in Chepauk.
