CSK head coach role on cards? Michael Hussey REJECTS England’s Test coach offer – Reports

Michael Hussey’s immediate coaching commitment is with Cricket Australia

The coaching landscape around international and franchise cricket has witnessed an interesting development in recent times. Former cricketers who have served as domestic or franchise-level coaches have been offered coaching roles in national setups. Australian batter Michael Hussey was recently offered the role of England’s red-ball batting coach. 

However, as per reports in The Guardian, the legendary Australian cricketer turned down the opportunity to join the England Test side. Hussey was approached after his former CSK colleague Stephen Fleming was appointed as the England head coach. Hussey turned the offer down, citing the full-time commitment and extensive travelling around the world. 

However, this development comes at an interesting time for Hussey, whose long association with the Chennai Super Kings has made him an ideal figure for the role of their head coach. CSK are actively looking for a new recruit, and they want someone familiar with the role who is aware of CSK’s team dynamics. 

Instead of a full-time role, Hussey prefers consultant jobs, which offer him the flexibility to spend time with family and continue his other coaching and commentary commitments. However, the decision seemed significant as Hussey rejected the offer despite being identified by Fleming himself. 

Does the England rejection indicate Michael Hussey’s future as CSK head coach?

CSK are looking for a successor to Stephen Fleming after the Kiwi mastermind moved into England’s Test coaching setup, ending his 17-year stint with the IPL franchise. Hussey instantly became an obvious choice given his long-time association with the franchise, first as a player and then as their batting coach. 

Hussey worked for years as a player under MS Dhoni and then worked alongside Stephen Fleming as their coach, which suggests that Hussey is clearly much more familiar with the franchise’s culture and systems. 

Though as of now there are no confirmed indications that CSK have offered Hussey the head coach position, his rejection of the England coaching role has left him open to flexible coaching commitments. However, his experience and existing relationship with the yellow army make him an attractive choice.
