Michael Vaughan called the IND vs IRE pitch “unacceptable” for ICC T20 World Cup standards.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has slammed the pitches being used at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York for the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024 because of its extremely challenging nature for the batters.

Vaughan posted his opinion about the pitch in New York during Ireland’s innings in the IND vs IRE clash on Wednesday.

The surfaces in New York have come under heavy scrutiny and criticism in the tournament because of their highly pace-friendly nature. The problem batters are facing in New York is not with extra bounce, but with inconsistent up and down bounce, and significant sideways movement off the surface.

No batter so far in three innings at this venue has been able to settle down. Sri Lanka and South Africa played here a couple of days ago. Sri Lanka were bowled out for only 77 with pacers taking eight wickets. Even South Africa took 16.2 overs to chase down 78.

In the IND vs IRE match, the Indian pacers ran riot over the Irish, bowling them out for 96. Eight wickets fell to pacers, one was a run-out, and one scalp was taken by a spinner.

Most of the Ireland batters could barely hit the ball off the middle of their bats, especially those deliveries which were pitched on length and behind. The top score for Ireland was 26 and only one batsman managed to score more than 20 runs.

Even during India’s batting, the experienced duo of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli found it difficult to get going against the inconsistent bounce and extra sideways movement.

This sub standard surface in New York is unacceptable: Michael Vaughan

The 2005 Ashes-winning captain, Michael Vaughan, reckons this is a poor introduction of cricket to the United States, which is hosting a major ICC tournament for the first time.

Vaughan tweeted, “Trying to sell the game in the states is great .. love it .. but for players to have to play on this sub standard surface in New York is unacceptable .. You work so hard to make it to the WC then have to play on this .. #INDvIRE”
