Mitchell Starc has been a pillar of strength for Australia with the ball in all forms of cricket. He recently became the left-arm pacer with most wickets in test cricket, breaking legendary Wasim Akram’s record. But, it is not just Starc’s bowling that contributes to Australia’s success in test cricket.

He has also been a reliable figure with the bat in the lower order. The left-hander has played some instrumental knocks in Australia’s whites. He did the same in first innings of the second Ashes 2025-26 test against England at the Gabba when he helped Australia extend their lead with a 77-run knock.

In the ongoing Ashes 2025-26, Starc is breaking some records and this time he has broken one with his bat. The left-arm pacer has now become the highest run-scorer in test cricket while batting at No. 9, going past former England fast bowler Stuart Broad.

Mitchell Starc now has 1408 runs to his name in 77 innings at an average of 22.34 batting at No.9. He also has an impressive eight fifty-plus scores. Whereas, Stuart Broad had scored 1389 runs in 75 innings at an average of 19.84. However, Broad crossed the three-figure mark once in his career. His highest score in tests is 169 runs that he scored against Pakistan at the Lord’s.

Australia in control

With his 77-run knock in the first innings, Starc has steered Australia to a comfortable position in the second test. Courtesy of Starc’s partnership with Alex Carey, Australia took a lead of 177 runs at the end of the first innings.

In reply, England are struggling at 134/6 and trail by 43 runs at stumps on day 3. Mitchell Starc dismissed the first innings’ centurion Joe Root and Jamie Smith to add two more wickets to his tally in the series. He will be looking to lead Australia to another victory that will stamp their authority in the series with a 2-0 lead.
