Mitchell Starc’s six-wicket haul in Mackay helped Australia bundle out Bangladesh for just 64.

Mitchell Starc once again underlined his status as one of the finest fast bowlers of this generation, delivering a spectacular comeback after the humiliation of their defeat against Bangladesh in the first Test. After the Australian side entered the second Test in Mackay under considerable pressure, Starc produced a spectacular spell.

The hosts needed their experienced Australian pace bowling trio to set the tone early in the second Test, and Starc once again delivered almost immediately. His acute ability to extract movement, generate pace and consistently challenge the batters with his lateral movement makes him a standout performer, especially with the new ball.

At 36, Mitchell Starc’s latest performance demonstrates that his pace, accuracy and wicket-taking ability still make him a relentless threat for opposition. More likely, it is to be noted that his efforts in Mackay could help Australia turn the tables after their unexpected defeat in Darwin.

Mitchell Starc produced a sensational performance in the first innings of the second Test at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay. He ripped through Bangladesh’s batting order and returned with stunning figures of 6/12 in his spell of 10 overs.

Bangladesh were eventually bowled out for just 64 runs in their first innings. Starc was handed the new ball, and he delivered on the very first ball with the wicket of the opener Shadman Islam. Starc later also dismissed the Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto for a golden duck in the same innings.

The spell was particularly significant for Starc, as the six-wicket haul took him past two major international milestones. The Australian left-arm speedster went past Dale Steyn’s Test wickets tally of 439 wickets and also took his international wicket tally to 767 wickets.

Starc moved past Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who finished his international career with 765 wickets. Starc would be eyeing Tim Southee’s record of 776 international wickets, with Australia scheduled to feature in several ODI and Test matches within the next year.

Such was the impact of Starc’s innings that Bangladesh were reduced to 12/5 within the first seven overs. This holds even more significance as Starc’s surge in wickets tally has been dominated by his Test and ODI performance, following his retirement from T20 internationals in 2025.
