Mitchell Starc opened his account in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in his first over against Oman.

Australia speedster Mitchell Starc continued his love affair with first-over wickets during the AUS vs OMN match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The left-arm fast bowler dismissed Oman opener Pratik Athavale for a golden duck to get his campaign started on a resounding note.

Australia hammered Oman by 39 runs in their Group B match at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados. Defending their total of 164, Australia got off to a terrific start from none other than Mitchell Starc, who dismissed Athavale lbw, via a sensational inswinging yorker.

It was typical Starc: a full, swinging delivery coming into the batter, aimed at his toes. It was either the batsman’s pad or stumps that were going to be hit by this brutal yorker.

Starc targetted the base of the stumps of the right-handed Pratik Athavale. The ball moved significantly in the air as it came into Athavale on the full. The batter was too late in bringing his bat down. The ball hit him low on his front pad and deflected onto his bat.

Starc and the Australian players went up in a huge appeal but umpire Joel Wilson denied them. The Aussies were confident and Mitchell Marsh, their captain, took a review.

Replays showed that the ball had first hit the pad then the bat, and ball-tracking technology proved that it was crashing into the base of the stumps. The umpire had to reverse his decision and Starc had another first-over wicket, just like he did in the Indian Premier League 2024 Qualifier 1 and the final for Kolkata Knight Riders.
