Mohammad Nabi, the veteran Afghanistan all-rounder, has confirmed that he will retire from ODI cricket after the ICC Champions Trophy next year. Nabi, 39, is one of the greatest players Afghanistan have produced and had made his international debut in 2009.

Afghanistan will be participating in the ICC Champions Trophy for the first time in 2025. Due to their sixth-place finish at the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, they were qualified. The top seven teams from the most recent ODI World Cup, as well as hosts Pakistan, will compete in the eight-team ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

The tournament is slated to be played from February 19 to March 9 and will be the first time since 1996 that Pakistan will host an ICC event.

“Will say goodbye to ODIs”- Mohammad Nabi

Ahead of the tournament, Mohammad Nabi has confirmed that it will be his final outing in ODIs for Afghanistan. Nabi stated that he had considered himself retired after the 2023 ICC World Cup, but with Afghanistan qualifying for the eight-team ICC Champions Trophy, he has decided to play in the tournament before bidding goodbye to the format.

“In my mind, from the last World Cup, I was retired but then we qualified for the Champions Trophy and I felt if I could play that, it would be great,” Nabi told the host broadcaster after the third ODI.

ESPNCricinfo reported that Mohammad Nabi has already conveyed his decision to retire from ODIs to the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB). But he will continue to give his services to Afghanistan team in T20Is with an eye on the 2026 T20 World Cup.

To the ACB media team, he said: “We will see, but no, I will not play for long. God willing, after the Champions Trophy, we will say goodbye to the ODIs.
