Mohammed Shami has been out of action since the World Cup 2023 final due to an ankle injury.

Senior India fast bowler Mohammed Shami is hoping to make his comeback through domestic cricket in the upcoming season before a much-awaited return to international cricket.

The 33-year-old speedster is currently recovering from an ankle surgery, which he underwent in February in London.

He has been out of action since the World Cup 2023 final against Australia, which Team India lost in Ahmedabad. Shami was the leading wicket-taker during the tournament, which he played with an ankle injury.

Among the major series he’s missed so far are the Test series against South Africa and England, the Indian Premier League 2024 and the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

I will come to play two-three matches for Bengal: Mohammed Shami

Currently, the fast bowler is at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, where he has started to bowl. According to a report in ESPNcricinfo, the selectors are hoping to see Shami return in the home Test matches against Bangladesh (September) and New Zealand (October-November) to monitor his bowling fitness ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25 in Australia.

Recently, Mohammed Shami attended an event in Kolkata, where he was felicitated by the East Bengal Club. There, he opened up on his return, saying that he would want to play a few domestic games for Bengal before making his international comeback.

Shami said, “It’s difficult to say when I will be back. I am trying hard, but hopefully you will get to see me in Bengal colors before I don the India jersey again. I will come to play two-three matches for Bengal and will come fully prepared for it.”
