Mohammed Shami picked up seven wickets against Madhya Pradesh on his Ranji Trophy return.

Senior Indian pacer Mohammed Shami is set to continue his comeback journey as he has been named in the Bengal squad for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2024-25.

Shami, who had been sidelined for nearly a year due to an Achilles tendon injury on his left leg, made a remarkable return to professional cricket in Bengal’s Ranji Trophy clash against Madhya Pradesh earlier this month.

Not only he picked seven wickets on his Ranji return but also played a vital 37-run knock, helping Bengal to a thrilling 11-run win against Madhya Pradesh.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will monitor Shami’s fitness in SMAT closely, considering the all-important Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which will start on November 22. According to PTI, the medical staff and the national selection committee want Shami to play more matches before deciding whether he should be flown to Australia to take part in the latter part of the test series.

Bengal has announced a strong 20-member squad for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Shami’s younger brother Mohammed Kaif has also been named in the squad for the upcoming T20 tournament. The squad also includes IPL stars Abhishek Porel and Shahbaz Ahmed. Bengal will begin their campaign against defending champions Punjab in Rajkot.

Bengal squad: Sudip Kumar Gharami (C), Abishek Porel (wk), Sudip Chatterjee, Shahbaz Ahmed, Karan Lal, Writtick Chatterjee, Ritwick Roy Chowdhury, Shakir Habib Gandhi (wk), Ranjot Singh Khaira, Prayas Ray Barman, Agniv Pan (wk), Pradipta Pramanik, Saksham Chaudhary, Mohammed Shami, Ishan Porel, Mohammed Kaif, Suraj Sindhu Jaiswal, Sayan Ghosh, Kanishk Seth and Soummyadip Mandal.

Shami’s inclusion is a timely boost for India who are looking to win their third consecutive test series on the Australian soil. The fast bowling cartel, already consisting of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna and Akash Deep, will get even stronger if Shami is declared fit to feature in the series.
