7/57!! Mohammed Shami registers best bowling figures by an Indian in ODI cricket

Mohammed Shami is the highest wicket-taker of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

Mohammed Shami blew away New Zealand in the first semi-final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, which was played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. On November 15, 2023, India won the match by 70 runs and made it into the finals of the tournament as well.

India chose to bat first after winning the toss. With a brilliant 47 off 29 balls, Rohit Sharma gave India the perfect start. He blasted four sixes and four fours throughout his innings, becoming the first batsman in Cricket World Cup history to hit 50 or more sixes.

Shubman Gill also played brilliantly and scored 80*, but he was forced to retire hurt on 79*, bringing out Shreyas Iyer. Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer combined for 163 runs for the third wicket. Virat hit his 50th ODI century. Kohli was bowled out for 117 runs, including 9 fours and 2 sixes.

Shreyas Iyer continued on and scored 105 in just 70 balls with 8 sixes and 4 fours, and with KL Rahul making 39* in 30 balls, India posted a mammoth 397/4 in 50 overs for New Zealand to chase.

Mohammed Shami takes 7/57

Mohammed Shami removed both Kiwi openers for 13 runs each to give India a good start. But then Kane Williamson (69) and Daryl Mitchell (134) added 181 runs for the third wicket to give India some concern.

But then it was Shami again, who dismissed both batters. He continued his brilliant bowling and finished with figures of 7/57. This was his third fifer in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 and fourth overall in the history of World Cups, making him the bowler with the most fifers in World Cups ever.

He also became the first Indian bowler to take a five-wicket haul in a ICC ODI knockout game and the first Indian to pick seven wickets in an ODI match. Shami’s 7/57 registered his best bowling figures by an Indian in World Cup, surpassing Ashish Nehra’s 6/23.

Shami, with his 7/57, left behind Stuart Binny as the best figure by an Indian in ODIs, as Binny had taken 6/4 against Bangladesh.

Here are the top five best bowling figures in ODIs by Indians:

1. 7/57- Mohammed Shami, 2023

2. 6/4- Stuart Binny, 2014

3. 6/12- Anil Kumble, 1993
