Mohammed Shami in doubt for Australia tour after pacer suffers new injury during rehab - Reports

Mohammed Shami has been out of action since last year’s ODI World Cup.
The Indian cricket team’s hopes of registering a hat-trick of test series wins in Australia have been dented as senior fast bowler Mohammed Shami is now doubtful for the tour Down Under after suffering a fresh knee injury while rehabbing at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, according to the latest report.
Shami has not played professional cricket since the World Cup 2023, in which he was the highest wicket-taker but played the competition with an ankle injury that kept worsening.
The injury required surgery in London earlier this year and he’s been rehabbing since and has missed all the international and Indian Premier League (IPL) action this year.
He was on his way to making a comeback in the coming weeks through domestic cricket and would have hoped to feature in the last one or two tests against New Zealand as well before embarking on the five-match test series in Australia.
Mohammed Shami injury news:
Shami has reportedly developed “swollen knees” at the NCA, which would take weeks to heal.
“Shami had resumed bowling, and he was looking on track to make a comeback to competitive cricket soon. But this knee injury has flared up recently. BCCI’s medical team is assessing the injury, but it may require quite a bit of time,” a BCCI source told The Times Of India.
“It’s a jolt for the NCA medical team. They have been working on him for over a year. They have one of the best workload management systems in place. The medical team is trying its best to put him back in the park soon.”
Mohammed Shami’s latest reported injury is a huge jolt to Team India. It would be interesting to see whether the selectors rest Jasprit Bumrah from the New Zealand test series, partially or completely.
India’s tour of Australia 2024-25 schedule:

December 6-10: 2nd test, Adelaide Oval, Adelaide (D/N)
December 14-18: 3rd test, The Gabba, Brisbane (D)
