Mohammed Shami was the highest wicket taker in the ODI World Cup 2023 in India.

Veteran Indian pacer Mohammed Shami hasn’t played cricket since the end of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023. During the mega tournament, the 33-year-old cricketer suffered an ankle injury and went on to play the whole World Cup with the help of injections and painkillers.

After the end of the ODI World Cup 2023, the BCCI medical team monitored Shami’s injury, and later on the right-arm speedster underwent surgery on his Achilles tendon in February 2024. Shami went on to miss major cricketing events in 2024 including Indian Premier League and ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

Prior to India’s departure for Sri Lanka tour, Indian men’s cricket team chief selector Ajit Agarkar opened up about Shami’s recovery and comeback date. During the pre-departure press conference, Agarkar revealed that Shami has started bowling at nets.

Agarkar further expressed that the Indian management main idea was to make Shami fit before the start of the two-match test series against September.

“He (Mohammed Shami) has started to bowl. The first Test is 19th September (first test against Bangladesh). That was always the goal (him making a comeback by that time). Whether he can make it back to the squad by that (Bangladesh series) time, I’ll have to speak with the guys at the NCA,” Agarkar said on July 22, 2024.

He tried to jump from the 19th-floor balcony: Shami’s friend makes shocking suicide revelation about Indian speedster

The veteran Indian cricketer Shami is regarded as one of the top fast bowlers in recent times, but his personal life has seen lots of ups and downs.

A few years back, Shami was separated from his wife Hasin Jahan after she filed a complaint against him for domestic violence. Shami’s ex-wife also accused him of match-fixing.

While Shami has been cleared of match-fixing, his close friend Umesh Kumar, in a podcast with Subhankar Mishra, revealed shocking details of Shami’s mental health.

Umesh Kumar said that Shami was fighting with everything during that phase and he lived with him in his house during that time.

Kumar added that, when match fixing allegations with Pakistan news broke, Shami was shattered, and the Indian pacer said he can tolerate everything but can’t betray his country (India).

“Shami was fighting with everything during that phase. He lived with me in my house. But when the fixing allegations with Pakistan broke, and led to a probe that night, he was shattered. He said that I can tolerate everything but not allegations of betraying my country,” Umesh said on the podcast.

Umesh further added that during early hours in one morning, he saw Shami standing at the 19th floor balcony, and he understood that Shami was trying to end his life by jumping from the balcony.

Umesh further revealed that when Shami got clean chit from the authorities, who were investigating the fixing allegation matter, the Indian pacer was as happy as winning a World Cup for India.

“It also came in the news that he wanted to do something drastic that night [end his life]. It was around 4 AM in the morning when I got up to drink water. I was on my way to the kitchen when I saw that he was standing on the balcony. It was the 19th floor we were living in. I understood what happened. That night of Shami’s career, I feel, was the longest. Later, one day, when we were talking, he got a message on his phone saying he got a clean chit from the committee that was investigating the matter. He was probably happier that day than he would have been if he had won a World Cup,” he added.
