"I usually don't.." Mohammed Shami breaks silence on Hardik Pandya shouting at him during IPL 2022 game

Mohammed Shami missed entire IPL 2024 due to ankle injury.

India veteran pacer Mohammed Shami has recalled the incident when former Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Hardik Pandya shouted at him during an Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 match.

The right-arm pacer has been out of cricketing action since the conclusion of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Shami was the highest wicket-taker at the ODI World Cup 2023 and played a huge role in helping the Indian cricket team reach the final of the mega event.

After the end of the ODI World Cup 2023, the 33-year-old Shami was monitored by the BCCI medical team, and then he underwent surgery on his Achilles tendon in February 2024.

The veteran speedster then missed the whole IPL 2024 and also the recently concluded ICC T20 World Cup 2024, where the Indian side lifted the title in June.

Recently, Indian pacer Shami opened up about an incident from 2022 edition of the IPL, when former Gujarat skipper Hardik Pandya shouted at him.

Speaking on the incident, the 33-year-old pacer expressed that cricketers should avoid such outbursts on the field. Shami mentioned that he shares a good relationship with Hardik, and the two have known each other for almost a decade.

“I usually don’t respond to such things, but when things get too bad, then I do speak up. We have a good connection and are friends. He didn’t realize it at that moment. We’ve known each other for almost 10 years. He told me, ‘I swear, I don’t know what I’ve said.’ Crores of people watch us on screen, we need to control our emotions,” Shami said on Shubhankar Mishra’s YouTube channel.

It’s worth mentioning that, under the leadership of Hardik, Gujarat won the IPL 2022 trophy, which was also their maiden season in the cash-rich league. Shami played 16 matches and picked 20 wickets at an average of 24.40 in that season.
