Mohammed Shami picked 7 wickets and conceded only 57 runs against New Zealand.

Mohammed Shami has become the hero for team India at Wankhede Stadium as he registered the best bowling figures by an Indian bowler in ODI cricket. Shami picked up 7 wickets against New Zealand in the World Cup semi-final. Shami took India to their 4th World Cup final with his brilliant bowling display. Shami’s average of just 9 and strike rate of just 10 in 6 games in the ongoing tournament has put him as the front-runner for the Player of the Tournament award as well.

Right-arm pacer Mohammed Shami picked up his 3rd five-wicket haul in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Earlier in ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, he picked up a five-for against England. With today’s five-wicket haul, Shami has surpassed Mitchell Starc, who has three five-wicket hauls to his name in the history of ICC Cricket World Cup.

Top 5 bowlers with most 5-wicket hauls in ICC Cricket World Cup

1. Mohammed Shami (India) – 4

2. Mitchell Starc (Australia) – 3

3. Gary Gilmour (Australia) – 2

4. Vasbert Drakes (West Indies) – 2

5. Ashantha de Mel (Sri Lanka) – 2

Shami took wickets in clusters

His spell of 7/57 made India bounce back nicely into the game even after the Kiwis put up a storing defiant partnership to chase down 398. Shami took wickets in clusters and dismissed both Kiwi openers in successive overs. Similarly, he dismissed Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson and his deputy Tom Latham in just a span of three deliveries. These small moments made a big impact in the game and despite putting up a strong face, New Zealand fell short by 70 runs.

Stuart Binny’s record for the best bowling figures by an Indian in ODI cricket is now also gone as Mohammed Shami became the first bowler in Indian history to take 7 wickets in an ODI. Mohammed Shami is only the 14th bowler in ODI history to take 7 wickets in an innings. Sri Lankan pacer bowler Chaminda Vaas holds the record for best bowling figure in an ODI game. Vaas picked up 8 wickets against Zimbabwe conceding only 19 runs in 8 overs. Notably, Shami is the only fifth bowler to pick a 7-fer in a World Cup game.

Mohammed Shami has also overtaken Zaheer Khan, who took 21 wickets in the World Cup 2011, most by any Indian bowler in an edition of ICC Cricket World Cup. Shami has now taken 23 wickets in the ongoing tournament. Mohammed Shami has now become the 7th bowler to take more than 50 World Cup wickets. He needed 3 to complete the milestone before the game began but ended up overtaking Trent Boult (53 Wickets) and currently stands at 6th with 54 wickets in just 17 games.
