Senior Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has broken his silence after being rejected for the Australia white-ball tour. He also provided an update on his fitness levels.

Shami was left out of India’s ODI and T20I squads for the white-ball tour of Australia, as well as the two-match test series against the West Indies, by Ajit Agarkar’s selection committee.

Mohammed Shami had played for India last in ICC Champions Trophy 2025, where he had taken a five-wicket haul in his first game of the tournament.

Shami admitted on his YouTube channel that he had received numerous questions about his fitness. Previously, chief selector Ajit Agarkar declared that Shami was not a contender for the Indian team since he did not play enough local cricket.

There have been many rumours and memes. Getting selected for the team is not in my hands. It’s the job of the selection committee, coach, and captain. If they feel I should be there, they will select me, or if they feel that I need more time, it’s their call. I am ready to play if I am called up,” Shami said on his YouTube channel.

Shami, the experienced pacer, had been out of action since the 2023 World Cup due to knee and ankle issues. He made his comeback in domestic cricket and then in the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year. But, his fitness issues continued, and he wasn’t picked in India’s test squad for the England tour.

He remains out of India’s squad for the ongoing West Indies series as well. Shami bowled 34 overs during his most recent appearance for the East Zone in the Duleep Trophy. The pacer stated that he is trying to get into even better form for India and that it was crucial for him to stay motivated while away from the team.

“My fitness is also good. I will try to do better because when you are away from the ground, you need to remain motivated. I played in the Duleep Trophy. I felt very comfortable, my rhythm was good, and I bowled around 35 overs. There are no issues with my fitness,” Shami said.

He has been named in Bengal’s Ranji Trophy 2025-26 squad as well and is likely to feature in their first game against Uttarakhand.
