Mohammed Shami has been out of action since the World Cup 2023 final.

In a positive development regarding Mohammed Shami, the India fast bowler is looking set for a return to professional cricket through the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season in October.

Shami has not played any form of the game since the World Cup 2023 final in November last year due to an ankle injury that he carried throughout the tournament.

At the start of 2024, he underwent ankle surgery in London and has since been out of action. Among the important series he missed were the test series against South Africa and England, followed by the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 and the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

Mohammed Shami named in Bengal’s 31-member probables list for upcoming domestic season

The 33-year-old seamer has been named in Bengal’s 31-man probables list for the 2024-25 domestic season. Shami is unlikely to feature in the two home test matches against Bangladesh, starting September 19. He is expected to return through the Ranji Trophy, starting October 11.

Bengal will kick off their Ranji season against Uttar Pradesh on October 11 and then take on Bihar from October 18.

He is reportedly nearing full fitness at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, where he has been training since returning from London after his surgery.

Mohammed Shami could return to test cricket with the home series against New Zealand. India will host the Kiwis for three tests, starting October 16.

Even if Shami misses the New Zealand tests, he will have ample time to get match practice in domestic cricket prior to leaving for Australia for the test series in November.

Indian players will leave for Australia after the conclusion of the New Zealand tests. The series will end on November 5 and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy will kick off on November 22.
