The left-handed keeper-batsman had sustained a blow on his wrist on Day 1 of the Test which led to him getting retired hurt midway through his innings. However, he returned to bat on Day 2 and scored a blistering half century (63 runs).
During that innings, Rishabh took many blows on his body, courtesy the short-ball tactic adopted by Sri Lankan pacers. He got two serious attacks on his right shoulder. However, he had continued batting until he got dismissed.
What followed those brutal blows on his shoulders was him being unfit to take the field in the second innings. Jurel took the gloves in his absence. On Day 3, Pant’s right shoulder was taped.
When asked about India’s first-choice wicket-keeper missing out on the innings, Morne Morkel, India’s pace-bowling coach, confirmed that Pant’s right shoulder is bruised and his movement is restricted. Speaking to reporters, he said:
He said, “His right shoulder is badly bruised. When he tried warm up this morning, his movement was restricted. They’ll be monitoring him tonight. Hopefully he’ll be behind the stumps tomorrow.”
