India hold the record for most consecutive wins in the T20 World Cup, breaking the record of South Africa.

The T20 World Cup 2026 got underway on February 7, 2026, with three games taking place. India are the defending champions of the T20 World Cup and opened their tournament against the United States of America (USA) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

The T20 World Cup, since its inception in 2007, has seen many teams dominating the tournament, with India becoming the first side to win the tournament undefeated in 2024. Several other teams have shown similar dominating runs by remaining unbeaten for a lengthy period of time.

With this in mind, let’s have a look at the list of teams with most consecutive wins in T20 World Cups.

Most consecutive wins in T20 World Cup history

5. 6 wins—India (2007-2009)

India started the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 with a no result against Scotland and a tie against Pakistan, which they won in a bowl-out. They then lost to New Zealand; that remained their only loss in the tournament, as they went on to win the trophy.

India’s winning run continued in the 2009 T20 World Cup as well, where they defeated Bangladesh and Ireland in their first two matches. However, their unbeaten run ended when West Indies defeated India at Lord’s in their third game by 7 wickets. 

4. 7 wins—India (2012-14)

In the 2012 T20 World Cup, India won their first two games, defeating Afghanistan and England at the RPS ground in Colombo. They suffered a loss to Australia in their third game, but then defeated Pakistan and South Africa, but failed to qualify for the semis.

India continued their winning run in the 2014 T20 World Cup, defeating Pakistan, West Indies, Bangladesh, Australia, and South Africa on their way to the final of the tournament. However, they fell short in the summit clash, losing to Sri Lanka by 6 wickets in Mirpur, Dhaka.

3. 8 wins—Australia (2022-24)

Australia began their 2022 T20 World Cup with a loss to New Zealand but then went on a rampage, winning against Sri Lanka, Ireland, and Afghanistan. But they had failed to make it to the semi-final of the event.

Australia continued their winning run in the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies, defeating Oman, England, Namibia, Scotland, and Bangladesh before finally losing to Afghanistan and India in the Super Eights. This ended their brilliant winning run across two T20 World Cups.

2. 8 wins—South Africa (2024)

South Africa had a dream run in the 2024 T20 World Cup, where they played games in both the USA and the West Indies. They started with wins over Sri Lanka, the Netherlands, and Bangladesh in Group D matches.

Then the caravan moved to the West Indies and South Africa and continued the winning run, defeating Nepal, the USA, England, and the West Indies. The Proteas faced Afghanistan in the semi-final of the tournament and defeated them; however, their winning run was stopped by India in the final.

1. 9 wins for India (2024-26, ongoing)

India have done well in the T20 World Cup 2024, defeating Ireland, Pakistan, and the USA in the first round in the USA. Their match against Canada was rained out. In the second stage in the West Indies in the Super Eights, India began by defeating Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Australia to qualify for the semi-final.

India defeated England by 68 runs in the semi-final and then met South Africa in the final. India won the 2024 T20 World Cup by defeating South Africa by 7 runs. India’s winning run has continued in the 2026 T20 World Cup, where they defeated the USA in their first match and broke the record for most consecutive wins in T20 World Cup history.

The Indian team was taken to the wire by the USA team in their tournament opener. Suryakumar Yadav’s 84* took India to a fighting 161/9 in 20 overs, before three wickets by Mohammed Siraj restricted the USA to 132/8. India won the game by 29 runs and registered their first win of the tournament. This was also India’s 9th consecutive win in the T20 World Cup competition.
