11 bowlers took over 50 wickets in ICC World Test Championship 2023-25.
Led by Temba Bavuma, South Africa outplayed Australia in the final of ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 by five wickets. The Proteas dominated the Pat Cummins & Co. in the final innings of the encounter at the Lord’s to chase down a huge 282-run target to win their first-ever ICC WTC title.
Nine teams were part of ICC WTC 2023-25, and each of them played a total of six test series during the tournament. Out of these, three were home campaigns while three were foreign tours. All the teams were ranked in the points table according to their win percentage (PCT).
South Africa finished in the top spot in the points table with a win percentage of 69.44. Out of six series, they won four series and lost one, while one bilateral campaign ended in a draw. The Proteas won eight games and lost only three out of 12 matches, including one draw encounter. They won seven games in a row in the lead up to the final.
Australia followed them in the second place with a close margin, ending with a PCT of 67.54. The defending champions claimed victories in four series, while two ended in draws. Out of 19 tests, they won 13 matches, lost four, and two ended in a draw.
India and New Zealand, who finished in the third and fourth spots in the points table respectively, gave brilliant performances during ICC WTC 2023-25. However, India lost their last two test series and failed to qualify for the final this time after finishing as runners-up in the first two editions. The Kiwis whitewashed India, but lost their last home series against England.
The thrilling ICC WTC 2023-25 final between South Africa and Australia at the Lord’s witnessed a roller-coaster show. In the first innings, Australia were bowled out for 212, while South Africa were bundled out for just 138 on the spicy wicket that favoured bowlers.
However, the wicket turned batting-friendly later, and Australia posted 207/10 in the second innings, setting up a gigantic 282-run target for the Proteas. The Temba Bavuma & Co. kept their patience in the final innings and did not succumb to the pressure. With brilliant batting efforts from Aiden Markram (136) and Bavuma (66), they won the encounter by five wickets.
The third edition of ICC WTC observed incredible performances by many bowlers over the last two years. Some of them showed a consistent form in every series and ended as the top wicket-takers in the tournament.
Overall, 11 bowlers took over 50 wickets in the ICC WTC 2023-25 cycle, where three Australian and two Indian bowlers are among the top five highest wicket-takers.
