Top 5 wicket-takers for India in day-night test matches
India played their first day-night test match in November 2019 against Bangladesh.
The introduction of the day-night test matches brought back the dipping interest of the fans in test cricket to some extent.
What makes it more interesting is that it is played with pink ball and not the regular red ball. This brought new challenges for both bowlers and batters that are different from traditional red-ball cricket.
India played their first day-night test when they locked horns against Bangladesh at Eden Gardens in November 2019. They have played a few games already and have a good record.
Especially at home, India have dominated pink-ball home tests, winning all three of them so far. Plenty of credit for this success goes to bowlers who have done a stellar job.
In this article, we will talk about the top five wicket-takers for India in day-night test matches.
Top five Indian bowlers with most wickets in day-night test matches:
5. Ishant Sharma – 10 Wickets
Ishant Sharma has taken the second-most test wickets among pacers for India. He was also the first Indian bowler to take a five-wicket haul in a pink-ball test.
Ishant played two day-night tests – against Bangladesh and England. He took ten wickets in those two tests with best figures of 5/22 vs Bangladesh.
4. Jasprit Bumrah – 10 Wickets
India’s spearhead pacer Jasprit Bumrah has played three day-night test matches so far. He has snapped 10 wickets in those games at an average of 14.50.
He was sensational against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru, taking eight wickets in the match, with best figures of 5/24
3. Umesh Yadav – 11 Wickets
Umesh Yadav was one of the most underrated test bowlers of his time. He often produced impactful performances in home conditions.
Umesh played two day-night test matches – against Australia and Bangladesh. In those, he snared 11 wickets at an average of 15.54 and best figures of 5/53 against Bangladesh at the Eden Gardens.
2. Axar Patel – 14 Wickets
Axar Patel has played in two day-night tests – against England in Ahmedabad and against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru – and bagged the Man of the Match award in the Ahmedabad test as he dismantled the English batting line-up twice in one game.
He registered figures of 6/38 and 5/32 in the pink-ball test against England in 2021 where India won the game by 10 wickets. Against Sri Lanka, he snapped three wickets.
He has taken 14 wickets in two games at an average of just 9.14 with two fifers. Currently, he is the only Indian bowler with ten or more wickets in a day-night test match.
