Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are entering a major transition period after one of the most successful coaching partnerships in. Indian Premier League (IPL) history came to an end. Stephen Fleming’s departure after 18 years has left the five-time IPL winners searching for a new coach. However, reports have suggested that the franchise, following their poor record over the last few seasons, are aiming to revamp the entire coaching unit instead of just opting for a new head coach.
It has also been claimed by several reports that MS Dhoni is playing a major role in foreseeing this appointment of a new head coach. Fleming’s exit has opened the door for a new tactical approach at the franchise. Former English captain Eoin Morgan and current CSK batting coach Michael Hussey have all featured in the discussions around the head coach’s role.
However, the latest development suggests that, as per MS Dhoni’s suggestions, the Chennai Super Kings are looking to find a suitable Indian candidate for the role. One of the IPL coaches has emerged as the top contender.

According to The Indian Express, Hemang Badani has emerged as the frontrunner to replace Stephen Fleming as CSK head coach, with former captain MS Dhoni understood to be asking for a takeover by an Indian head coach. The final decision would, however, remain with the franchise owners.
Badani brings considerable experience, as he was named the Delhi Capitals head coach and was also involved with various other T20 teams. His appointment holds another massive significance for the Chennai Super Kings, and that is a coach focused on just one franchise’s development.
The CSK own many franchises across global tournaments, and Stephen Fleming assumed duties as the head coach of all of these franchises. However, Dhoni wants someone focused only on the IPL. Albie Morkel has already been declared the head coach of the Joburg Super Kings in the SA20 league.
This indicates that if Badani is appointed as the CSK head coach, then he will only take over the duties in the IPL and will not be included in the same role as Stephen Fleming in the other Super Kings-owned franchises.
Though nothing is confirmed or official as of now, this report is indicative of MS Dhoni’s influence on the Super Kings side. However, clarity over Dhoni’s role in IPL 2027 still remains unclear.
