The franchise is reportedly waiting for Dhoni to take the final call on whether he wants to take up the head coach role or continue with the team as mentor.
Dhoni did not play a single match for CSK in IPL 2026, which has created further uncertainty around his playing future. Although his role in the franchise remains important, the team is yet to confirm whether he will return to the field next season.
CSK coach appointment also on hold
Recent reports claimed that CSK could announce their new head coach by September 20. However, the franchise’s immediate focus is on Dhoni’s decision before finalising the coaching structure.
Names such as Michael Hussey and other former CSK coaching staff members have been discussed, but no appointment has been officially confirmed yet.
Dhoni has been the central identity of CSK since the beginning of the tournament. Even after stepping away from captaincy, his presence has remained important inside the franchise.
If Dhoni chooses to become a mentor, CSK could appoint a full-time head coach who works alongside him. If he takes a more active coaching role, the franchise could build their support staff around that decision.
For now, everything depends on what MS Dhoni wants to do next. CSK are therefore unlikely to make a major move until their former captain takes the final call.
