MS Dhoni will play for Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League 2026.
Former Indian captain MS Dhoni is gearing up for the Indian Premier League (IPL 2026). The upcoming season will begin in the last week of March. The wicket-keeper batsman has been retained by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and will play another season for the five-time champions.
While CSK are the joint most successful team in IPL in terms of winning titles, their name was also involved in the IPL 2013 betting scandal. Since CSK owners were found guilty of betting, the franchise was banned for two years. Along with the Rajasthan Royals (RR), the Super Kings were banned from participating in the IPL 2016 and 2017 seasons.
The IPL 2013 betting scandal is among the biggest controversies in the tournament’s history. Three Rajasthan Royals players, S. Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila, and Ankeet Chavan were found guilty of spot fixing, and their careers were affected.
News of Dhoni’s involvement was also shared by news clips and debates on Zee Media. As a result, the former CSK captain had filed a defamation suit against IPS officer Sampath Kumar and others in the Madras High Court. Kumar had initially probed the IPL betting scam.
MS Dhoni was asked to pay INR 10 lakh

MS Dhoni has been asked to pay INR 10 lakh because of the IPL 2013 betting case. The cost is towards transcribing and translating compact discs submitted as evidence in his defamation suit against a journalist and an IPS officer.
The Madras High Court’s Justice R.N. Manjula said that the task of translating and transcribing the Hindi language recordings of the news clips and the televised debates required an interpreter and a typist. They were hired for three to four months. Hence, the former Indian captain will have to bear the cost.
The CSK stalwart will have to deposit the amount with the Chief Justice’s Relief Fund by March 12, 2026 and after the payment, the 12-year-old civil case will proceed.
“As the engagement of official Interpreter is needed in view of the extraneous circumstances and as mentioned in the earlier order dated 28.10.2025, it is obligatory on the part of the plaintiff to pay the cost of the job done,” an order from the Bench read.
Notably, Dhoni had filed an INR 100 crore defamation suit against a journalist and the retired IPS officer in the case. They made defamatory statements against him by linking him to betting and match-fixing in the IPL 2013 season. Dhoni has denied any involvement and the case has been delayed over the years due to multiple interim applications and appeals.
