Dhoni’s future with CSK remains a talking point among fans. The franchise retained him for ₹4 crore as an uncapped player ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.
During IPL 2025, Dhoni took over as CSK’s interim captain after regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad suffered an elbow injury. However, calf and finger injuries kept him out of the entire 2026 season.
CSK had a difficult IPL 2026 campaign and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The five-time champions finished eighth in the points table, with six wins and eight defeats from 14 matches.
CSK will look to fix their batting and bowling problems before IPL 2027. The team will also need to pick the right players at the auction to build a stronger squad for the next season.
The franchise will aim to return to the playoffs after missing out for three straight seasons. CSK will also need to plan for the future, especially with Dhoni’s IPL career nearing its final stage and his availability for the next season still unclear.
