MS Dhoni is gearing up to play for CSK in IPL 2026.

MS Dhoni’s long association with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) continues as the keeper-batter is pulling his socks up for Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. The tournament will commence on March 28 and CSK will play their opening game against Rajasthan Royals (RR) on March 30 in Guwahati.

CSK had a dismal show last season, where they were led by Dhoni after Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out after five games due to an elbow injury. However, the franchise gave a poor performance and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

They won just four games and lost 10 out of 14, ending at the last spot in the points table. Now, CSK will aim for a big comeback in the upcoming season.

Ahead of the tournament, the five-time champions roped in Sanju Samson from Rajasthan Royals (RR) through a trade deal. Samson is now seen as a successor of wicket-keeper batter Dhoni in future. Ruturaj Gaikwad will be back to lead the side in the IPL 2026.

Notably, Dhoni has led many players in the past in IPL and Sam Billings is one of them. He played for the side in two editions from 2018 to 2019 and was part of the CSK’s winning squad in the IPL 2018.

The England wicket-keeper batsman recently appeared on a talk show ‘Stick to Cricket’, where he had conversations with former England cricketers in Michael Vaughan and Alastair Cook. During the show, he revealed that Dhoni is a big fan of the Manchester United football club. He also added that they used to watch their matches together in the hotel room when he was part of the team.

“[He is] Obviously a Man United fan, like myself, and so we’d watch every Man United game because he can’t leave the hotel, he can’t go downstairs to the hotel bar, and he’d get a load of the lads,” Billings said.

Terming Dhoni as the best captain he has played with, Billings said, “MS Dhoni, has to be. I think just in terms of his captaincy, his aura. Oh, he’s fantastic. In terms of just so incredibly calm and he’s genuinely cool. There’s not many cool people. You don’t meet many cool people nowadays, really, apart from you. But he is just what a lovely guy, considering how much stardom he has and so much of a superstar”.

Last season, Dhoni scored 196 runs in 13 innings at an average of 24.50 and a strike rate of 135.17 with a highest score of unbeaten 30 runs. Earlier this month, he joined the CSK pre-camp for Indian players.

He also attended the T20 World Cup 2026 final between India and New Zealand at Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad.
