Reportedly, BCCI has decided to retire former India captain MS Dhoni’s jersey.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken a historic step by retiring the iconic team India number 7 jersey, which was used by the legendary Mahendra Singh Dhoni. This decision comes as a fitting tribute to the former captain’s illustrious career and contributions to Indian cricket. Dhoni, who bid farewell to international cricket in 2019, had proudly donned the number 7 jersey throughout his tenure with the national team.

The move follows in the footsteps of a similar honor given to cricketing icon Sachin Tendulkar, whose No. 10 shirt was retired by Indian board. With the retirement of Dhoni’s No. 7 jersey, BCCI seeks to immortalize the significance of the player who led India to numerous victories, including all three ICC titles.

Reports suggest that BCCI has communicated to current Indian team players that No. 7 jersey is off-limits, mirroring the precedent set with Tendulkar’s jersey. A senior board official conveyed to Indian Express, “The young players and current Indian team players have been told not to pick M. S. Dhoni’s number 7 jersey. The BCCI has decided to retire Dhoni’s T-shirt for his contribution to the game.”

Dhoni, who continues to showcase his cricketing skills in IPL with Chennai Super Kings, had previously shed light on the choice of the number 7. During a virtual interaction, he revealed, “A lot of people initially thought that 7 was a lucky number for me and all of that. But I chose the number for a very simple reason. I was born on July 7. So it’s the 7th day of the 7th month; that was the reason.”
