IPL 2024: Mumbai Indians become first team to play 250 matches in IPL history
Mumbai Indians (MI) achieved this feat during their first home game of the IPL 2024 against RR.
Five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) have etched their name into record books as they became first team to play 250 matches in the Indian Premier League (IPL). MI achieved this historic achievement before the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Punjab Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Delhi Capitals. All four teams have been part of all 17 editions of the cash-rich league thus far.
The landmark occasion came against the Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium in their ongoing IPL campaign on April 1.
The Mumbai-based franchise is one of the most successful teams in the IPL history with having five titles to their name. MI have been a constant force since the inaugural seasons in 2008.
They’ve built a loyal fanbase with their aggressive brand of cricket. Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, the franchise won record five IPL championships in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020.
This milestone match holds special significance for Mumbai as they navigate a period of change under new captain Hardik Pandya. The MI all-rounder was named as the new leader after a trade deal with Gujarat Titans ahead of the IPL 2024 mini-auction.
Pandya replaced Rohit Sharma as captain of the team and since then Mumbai fans have constantly backlashed at Hardik for taking over leadership responsibilities from Rohit.
Teams to play most matches in the IPL:
1. Mumbai Indians (MI) – 250* matches
2. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) – 244 matches
3. Delhi Capitals (DC) – 241 matches
4. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) – 239 matches
5. Punjab Kings (PBKS) – 235 matches
