Mumbai Indians were involved in talks to materialise a trade deal involving skipper Hardik Pandya.

Mumbai Indians could enter the next IPL season without making a major change in the coaching department. The five-time champions have struggled in recent seasons.

As the franchise prepares to bid for the 2027 season, it is understood to be prioritising stability over a sweeping overhaul.

The coaching position has been one of the key roles that has attracted significant attention, particularly after Mumbai’s recent chain of events. With the rising level of competition in the IPL, decisions regarding coaching, captaincy, and team composition have become topics of discussion in recent times.

A recent report by the Times of India reveals that the Mumbai Indians are not in the mood to make any major changes to their squad. Ahead of the next season, there was immense speculation around the role of Hardik Pandya, who captained the team over the past three seasons.

Mahela Jayawardene likely to continue as MI coach

Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere

Mahela Jayawardene is likely to remain the Mumbai Indians’ head coach for IPL 2027. The franchise is reportedly reluctant to make another change in the coaching role and could extend the Sri Lankan legend’s one-year contract.

His current contract with Mumbai Indians included a ‘two-plus-one’ year deal, and this term is now coming to an end. MI are most likely to activate it or extend it by another season. A formal announcement is expected next month.

MI also face questions around squad and trade speculation

The biggest talking point in the Mumbai dressing room was experienced Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who had served as the team’s captain over the past few seasons. Pandya’s performance has not been up to the mark, and he has also struggled as the skipper.

It is possible that MI were negotiating a trade deal involving Kolkata Knight Riders all-rounder Cameron Green. Green had made his IPL debut for MI. However, the talks have clearly not materialised. CSK might make a move on the seasoned Indian all-rounder once they appoint a head coach.

Moreover, another development from TOI suggests that Mumbai Indians might be considering retaining Hardik as a full-time player and handing over the captaincy to someone else.

Although the situation last season suggested that Suryakumar Yadav might be included in the team, recent discussions indicate that he is most likely to remain with his franchise—though not as captain.

Tilak Varma and Jasprit Bumrah have emerged as potential contenders for the captaincy. Mumbai Indians captaincy talks have actively involved Rohit Sharma during team meetings.

Here are all the latest updates:

  • Mahela Jayawardene likely to continue as MI head coach.
  • No progress in the Hardik Pandya trade deal.
  • Tilak Varma and Jasprit Bumrah are contenders for captaincy in 2027.
  • Suryakumar Yadav is likely to remain with the franchise.
