Mumbai won their 42nd Ranji Trophy title.

The eight-year Ranji Trophy title drought ended for Mumbai as they crushed Vidarbha by 169 runs on day five of the summit clash of the 2023-24 season to clinch the elite domestic trophy for a record 42nd time at the iconic Wankhede Stadium on Thursday.

Mumbai bowlers stood tall, led by veteran pacer Dhawal Kulkarni, who was playing his last First-Class (FC) match. Mumbai’s victory was a fitting tribute to Kulkarni’s legacy in Indian domestic cricket. The right-arm pacer also took the final wicket of Vidarbha batter Umesh Yadav, who was dismissed for six runs.

Mumbai’s spin-bowling all-rounder Tanush Kotian and fast bowler Tushar Deshpande emerged as the main heroes of Vidarbha’s downfall, dismantling their batting line-up for 368 runs in an unprecedented chase of 538 runs.

The visitors were in a good position with five wickets in hand during lunch break on Day 5. However, Vidarbha saw a collapse where they lost their last five wickets quickly. With the ball, Tanush Kotian scalped four wickets, while Deshpande and Musheer Khan took two wickets each as Shams Mulani and Kulkarni shared a wicket each in the second innings.

Rs 10 crores for Mumbai cricket team after winning Ranji Trophy 2023-24 title

After winning the record-extending 42nd Ranji Trophy title, the Mumbai side was awarded Rs 5 crores from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Soon after this, Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) also announced that they would double the prize money for the team after their historic victory in the final over Vidarbha.

The MCA stated that the Mumbai team would get an additional amount of Rs 5 crore as prize money for winning the Ranji Trophy title after a gap of eight years. The side last won the elite domestic cup in 2015/16 season.

“MCA president Amol Kale and Apex Council has decided to double the Ranji Trophy prize money. The MCA will pay additional sum of five crore of rupees to the winning Mumbai Ranji Trophy team. It has been a great year for the MCA as the association has won 7 titles and we have made it knock out stage in all age groups in BCCI tournaments,” a statement from MCA secretary Ajinkya Naik read.
