Shakib Al Hasan played a key role in Bangladesh’s win in the first test against Pakistan in Rawalpindi.

Veteran Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has landed in hot waters regarding his personal life after being named in an FIR in a murder case of a garment worker during the anti-government movement in the country.

While Shakib was playing in the first Rawalpindi test, which Bangladesh won to register their first-ever test match win over Pakistan, he was named in an FIR among the 156 people accused of the killing of Mohammad Rubel, a garment worker in Dhaka.

This list also includes the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled away from Bangladesh after resigning from her post when the protests grew stronger and took a violent turn.

Last week, Supreme Court lawyer Shajib Mahmood Alam sent a legal notice to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) through email and registered post on behalf of Advocate Md Rafinur Rahman, asking for the removal of Shakib from the national side immediately and also demanding that the all-rounder be brought back to Bangladesh.

Shakib, who was part of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League party, had left Bangladesh when the protests began. He was in Canada to play in the Global T20 League and from there he came to Pakistan to play in the test series.

Shakib Al Hasan will not return to Bangladesh after Pakistan test series

BCB president Faruque Ahmed has confirmed that Shakib Al Hasan will play in the second test against Pakistan, and will keep playing international cricket until proven guilty. Further, an official also confirmed that Shakib will not return to Bangladesh, and will fly to England to play a first-class match for Surrey in order to prepare for the test series in India.

From England, he will fly to India for the two-match test series that begins on September 19.

“He [Shakib] has not played red-ball cricket for a while and that is why we have given him an NOC to play for Surrey as it will help him to adjust with red-ball cricket more than anything else,” a BCB official confirmed Cricbuzz on Tuesday.
