Nathan Lyon said Yashasvi Jaiswal will be a “massive challenge” for Australian bowlers this summer.
Australian veteran off-spinner Nathan Lyon feels that Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal will be a massive challenge for Australian bowlers during the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. The high-voltage five-match test series will be played from November 22 to January 7, 2025.
The Indian cricket team has clinched the last two consecutive series (2018-19 and 2020-21) in Australia and will be aiming for a hat-trick of test series wins on Australian soil.
Meanwhile, the host will be looking to win the Border Gavaskar Trophy back after almost a decade. India have held the Border Gavaskar Trophy since 2017.
Jaiswal will be a massive challenge for us: Nathan Lyon
Since making his test debut against the West Indies in July 2023, young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has had a bumper start to his test career. The 22-year-old has played nine games and scored 1028 runs at a stunning average of 68.53. The Indian opener has cracked three centuries and four fifties till now.
During the test series against England earlier, Jaiswal amassed 712 runs at an impressive average of 89, including two double hundreds and three fifties. The Uttar Pradesh-born cricketer will be touring Australia for the first time with the senior team. Jaiswal would be looking to put on a good show against a tough Australian bowling attack.
Lyon said that Jaiswal will be a “massive challenge” for the Australian bowlers in their encounter this summer.
The off-spinner revealed that he had a chat with England left-arm spinner Tom Hartley during his stint County Championship for Lancashire earlier this year where Hartley spoke of his experience of bowling against the current Indian batters.
Lyon also said he watched the India vs England test series closely to analyze Jaiswal’s batting.
“I haven’t come across him [Jaiswal] yet, but that will be a massive challenge for all us bowlers. The way he played against England, I watched that quite closely and thought that was quite amazing. I had some really good chats with Tom Hartley about different ways he went about it to different guys which I found quite interesting,” Nathan Lyon was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo
“I love talking about cricket, so if I can talk to someone who has played Test cricket I might be able to pick up something I’m not aware of. There’s so much knowledge floating around this game that we can always tap into,” the off-spinner added.
