Nepal have two matches remaining, against South Africa and Bangladesh.

The ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024 is the second T20 World Cup appearance for the Nepal cricket team. The Rohit Paudel-led side are placed in Group D alongside South Africa, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and the Netherlands.

The top two teams from the group will proceed to the Super 8 round.

Rohit Paudel’s team have played two matches in the competition so far and have one point to show. They began their tournament against the Netherlands in Dallas. The Asian side lost to the Dutch by 6 wickets. They were bowled out for only 106 runs, courtesy of three-wicket hauls from Tim Pringle and Logan van Beek. The Netherlands chased down the target in 18.4 overs.

Their second match was against Sri Lanka in Florida on June 11. However, the match was abandoned due to persistent rain and even toss couldn’t happen. The match was called off and both teams shared a point each, which meant both teams got off the mark on the points table.

Can Nepal still reach the Super 8 round of the T20 World Cup 2024 after washout against Sri Lanka?

With one point in two matches, Nepal are still mathematically alive in the Super 8 race. If they win both their remaining matches, against South Africa and Bangladesh, they will reach five points and they will have to hope that the Netherlands, who have two points in two games, don’t reach six points.

If Nepal lose one of their remaining two matches, they will be out of the tournament. Expecting them to beat even one of South Africa or Bangladesh is a bit too much.

Sri Lanka, who have one point in three fixtures, are all but out of the race to the next round and are only mathematically alive.

South Africa, with six points in three games, have already qualified for the next round of the competition from Group D.
