CSK parted ways with Stephen Fleming on Monday, July 13.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have parted ways with their head coach Stephen Fleming. On Monday, July 13, the franchise announced that Fleming has stepped down as the coach after a 17-year-long tenure from 2009 to 2026 in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Fleming played for CSK in the inaugural season in 2008, when they finished as runners-up. He was appointed as the head coach in the following year. Playing a crucial role alongside MS Dhoni, Fleming guided Chennai to record five trophies.

The Dhoni-Fleming pair turned the Men in Yellow into one of the most dominant sides in the IPL. While Dhoni led the team from the front with his leadership skills, Fleming backed him and gave an equal support.

Super Kings won their last title in the 2023 season by defeating Gujarat Titans (GT) in the final and equalled Mumbai Indians’ (MI) record of five IPL trophies. Since 2024, Chennai have witnessed dismal form, failing to even reach the playoffs in each three editions.

After Fleming’s ouster, the Men in Yellow need a strong head coach in the IPL 2027 who can bring back their dominance in the tournament. A few names are top contenders to become CSK’s next head coach.

According to reports by Times of India (TOI), Hemang Badani is one of the top contenders to be the next head coach of CSK. Badani was the head coach of Delhi Capitals (DC) in IPL 2026 and his two-year-contract has ended this year.

Although Badani has not officially stepped down as DC coach so far, reports suggest that the franchise is looking to overhaul its support staff department. DC’s co-owners JSW Group are set to take full control of the team’s operations in IPL 2027 and execute many changes.

As a result, Sourav Ganguly is expected to be the head coach of DC in the next season, which will leave no spot for Badani. Moreover, the entire support staff and top executives, including Venugopal Rao, Hemang Badani, Munaf Patel, and Ian Bell, are not expected to be retained for the next season.
