Top 5 New Zealand batsmen with most centuries in test cricket

Only one New Zealand batsman has hit more than 20 test centuries.

The New Zealand cricket team are often regarded as an underdog but they have regularly punched above their weight against teams that seem stronger on paper than them.

New Zealand have produced some of the most talented and skilful batters who have established themselves among the elites of the game. These batters have neutralized any challenging conditions against some of the greatest bowling attacks across the world in test cricket.

Their ability to convert starts into a century has been a hallmark of their legacy and they have contributed significantly to their test cricketing history.

In this article, we will talk about the top five batters with the most test centuries for New Zealand cricket till now.

Most hundreds for New Zealand in Tests:

5. John Wright, Brendon McCullum -12 centuries

Former opener John Wright and former skipper Brendon McCullum recorded 12 test centuries each and are the joint-fifth in the tally of the most hundreds for New Zealand in the longest format.

McCullum played 101 tests from 2004 to 2016 and averaged 38 while scoring 6453 runs. McCullum’s highest score in test cricket is 302, which is the highest individual score by a Kiwi batter.

Wright featured in 82 tests from 1978 to 1993, scoring 5334 runs at an average of 37.

4. Tom Latham – 13 centuries

Veteran opener Tom Latham has made 13 test centuries in 80 matches till now. The left-handed batter has the highest score of 264*. Latham is placed fourth in the list of the most hundreds for New Zealand in the longest format.

The southpaw has scored 5418 runs at an average of 39 in test cricket.

3. Martin Crowe – 17 centuries

Former middle-order batter and captain Martin Crowe was the backbone of New Zealand’s batting order in the 1980s and until the mid-1990s.

Martin played 77 tests and scored 17 hundreds, the third-most for his country in the longest format. He amassed 5444 at an average of 45.

2. Ross Taylor – 19 centuries

Former skipper Ross Taylor was a crucial cog in New Zealand’s test side for 15 years. Taylor played 112 tests and recorded 19 centuries, the second-most by a Kiwi batsman.

Taylor scored 7683 runs at an impressive average of 44 and is his nation’s second-highest test scorer.

1. Kane Williamson – 32 centuries

Modern-day legend Kane Williamson has been the heart of New Zealand’s batting across formats for the past decade. The former skipper is the only Black Caps batsman to record more than 20 test centuries.

With 32 test hundreds so far, Williamson is New Zealand’s leading century scorer. In 100 tests until now, he has scored 8743 runs, the most for his country, at a terrific average of 54.
