The Kane Williamson-led New Zealand have lost both their matches so far.
After going down by 84 runs against Afghanistan, New Zealand lost by 13 runs against the West Indies in their second Group C encounter at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. This has pushed the Kane Williamson-led side to the brink of elimination, with only a miracle needed for them to go to the Super 8 stage.
On Wednesday night at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad, Rovman Powell’s team became the fourth side in the competition to seal their place in the Super Eight round with a 13-run victory over the Kiwis.
Williamson’s team had reached the semi-final and final of the last two T20 World Cups but this time they are standing little to no chance of qualifying for the Super Eight and facing the danger of a group-stage exit.
West Indies top the Group C with six points in three games. Afghanistan are second with two wins in two games and have a brilliant net run rate of +5.225. Afghanistan’s remaining matches are against Papua New Guinea and West Indies. They are expected to beat PNG and seal their place in the next round. The Kiwis languish at the bottom of the points table with two losses in two games and have an NRR of -2.42.
Can New Zealand still reach the Super 8 of the T20 World Cup 2024?
New Zealand are all but out of the Super Eight qualification race. With Afghanistan yet to play PNG and have a far superior NRR compared to the Kiwis, New Zealand practically don’t seem to have a chance, though they are mathematically still alive.
Sherfane Rutherford was the Man of the Match against the Black Caps for his terrific knock of 68* (39) that took his side to 149. In reply, the Kiwis managed to score 136.
