Pacer Rosemary Mair has been named in the New Zealand squad for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.
New Zealand women’s team captain Sophie Devine and all-rounder Suzie Bates are set to feature in their ninth women’s T20 World Cup after being named in the squad for next month’s event in the UAE.
On Tuesday, 10th September, New Zealand named their 15-member squad for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 and it saw the return of seamer Rosemary Mair, who had sustained a back injury in the home series against England in March.
Mair, who has 24 WT20Is under her belt, joins the pace attack that includes Lea Tahuhu, Jess Kerr, Hannah Rowe and Molly Penfold, with Devine, Bates and Brooke Halliday supporting as pace-bowling all-rounders.
For the conditions in the UAE, New Zealand have picked Leigh Kasperek, Melie Kerr, Fran Jonas and Eden Carson as their premier spinners.
Among the 15 players picked, only wicket-keeper batter Izzy Gaze has never played in a women’s T20 World Cup.
New Zealand head coach Ben Sawyer said, “I’m really pleased with this squad; I think these are our best 15 players to adapt to what will likely be varied conditions. Soph [Devine] and Suze [Bates] have a huge amount of tournament experience from World Cups to franchise leagues, so we’ll certainly be leaning on that knowledge in what’s going to be a pretty intense competition.”
Before the tournament in October, New Zealand will take on Australia with the same squad in a three-T20I series. The matches will be played on September 19, 22 and 24 in Mackay and Brisbane.
Then they will play warm-up matches against South Africa and England on September 29 and October 1, respectively, before the main tournament gets underway.
New Zealand are placed in Group A along with India, Australia, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. The top two teams will proceed to the semi-finals. New Zealand’s first match is against India on October 4.
