Nic Maddinson to play for Sydney Thunder in BBL 2025-26 despite battling cancer

The 33-year-old Australian batter, Nic Maddinson, will be returning to the cricket field while his battle with cancer continues. He will be playing for the Sydney Thunder in the upcoming season of the Big Bash League, which starts on December 14.
Nic Maddinson was diagnosed with testicular cancer earlier this year, and he was having chemotherapy until July this year. However, he has been deemed fit now and will be plying his trade in the BBL 2025-26. Sydney Thunder will be the fourth BBL franchise Maddinson will be playing for, having earlier played for Sydney Sixers, Melbourne Stars, and Melbourne Renegades.
Nic Maddinson prepared for BBL return
Nic Maddinson last played a competitve match in March earlier this year for New South Wales. He has been out of action for more than eight months but is prepared to contribute to Sydney Thunders’ BBL campaign.
“I’m really happy to be staying with Thunder. There’s been a few setbacks for myself lately, but I’ve had amazing support from my friends, family and the club. Now I’m just keen to lock in, get the season started and hopefully help the boys go one better than last year,” said Maddinson.

Sydney Thunder bolstered with Maddinson’s addition
Talking about Maddinson’s inclusion in the squad, Sydney Thunder’s general manager Trent Copeland said,
“We are pleased to have Maddo re-sign with us at Sydney Thunder. I know how eager he was to play in front of the Thunder Nation before his injury, and I know that eagerness has doubled since then. We’re backing Maddo to make a real impact this season, both at the crease and through his leadership around the team.”
Sydney Thunder will play their first match of the upcoming season against Hobart Hurricanes on December 16.
