IPL’s overall value got dropped by 20% in 2025.

The Indian Premier League has seen a blip in its market value this year. The ban on real money gaming is one of the major reasons behind the slump in the value of the biggest cricket franchise league. According to a Brand Finance report, the value has declined by 20% year-on-year (YoY) from $12 billion in 2024 to $9.6 billion in 2025.

The government’s decision to ban real-money gaming platforms was expected to bring a shift in the financial landscape of sports in India but it has been exact opposite of that. IPL has started to face the implications as the money flowing in from the real money gaming sector has come to a halt.

IPL brand value experiences a dip

The magnitude of slump is similar to what the league experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic. The $9.6 billion is the lowest since 2023. It is also the first time since 2023 that the valuation has dropped below $10 billion mark.

A D&P advisory had earlier pegged the IPL valuation at ₹76,100 crore ($8.8 billion) in 2025, down from ₹82,700 crore ($9.9 billion) in 2024 and ₹92,500 crore ($11.2 billion) in 2023. The ban on real money gaming would push the league to look for other revenue streams.

Geopolitical tension also plays its role

The reports claimed that the tensions between India and Pakistan in the wake of the Pahalgham terror attack have also played a role. BCCI had to suspend several IPL matches, including the playoffs in 2025, after the geopolitical skirmish took a severe turn following India’s military action.

In recent reports, Jio Star is also planning to exit the broadcast rights deal with the International Cricket Council (ICC) after financial losses. The ban on real money gaming has affected all the stakeholders, including the broadcasters.
