Nicholas Pooran fell only two runs short of his maiden T20I century.

In the WI vs AFG match at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, swashbuckling West Indies keeper-batsman Nicholas Pooran got run out with only a couple of runs short of what would have been his maiden T20I century. It was a special innings of 98 (53) from Pooran and it needed a spectacular fielding effort from Azmatullah Omarzai in the deep to end Pooran’s knock.

Match number 40 of the tournament, the last group-stage game, was between two undefeated teams, West Indies and Afghanistan, at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Gros Islet, St Lucia. In this game, the hosts emerged victorious by a huge margin of 104 runs after posting 218 on the board, courtesy of Pooran’s whirlwind knock.

The left-hander, though, would be gutted to miss out on a maiden T20I century, especially through a runout.

Earlier in the match, Omarzai had conceded 36 runs in an over, the joint-most expensive over in T20I history with Pooran on strike. He got a bit of revenge with this spectacular run-out that ended Pooran’s knock with two runs away from a three-digit score.

Pooran creamed a low full toss from Naveen-ul-Haq through cover. At deep cover, Omarzai sprinted to his left, collected the ball neatly and fired it to the striker’s end where Pooran was running to the danger end. It was a perfect throw from Omarzai – flat and bouncing just in front of the stumps. The ball surprisingly hit the stumps without the need of the wicket-keeper.

Pooran realised the danger and made a full-length dive. However, the batter was a bit short of the crease at he time the ball hit the stumps and he had to take the walk back wondering what could have been had he not tried to return for the second runs.
