Nicholas Pooran, David Wiese shine as Canada Super 60 Season 2 kicks off on a high
Canada Super 60 Season 2 will be played from September 30 to October 4.
Vancouver, September 30: West Indies star Nicholas Pooran and international all-rounder David Wiese headlined an action-packed opening day of Canada Super 60 Season 2 at BC Place, as Brampton Blitz, Toronto Sixers and Mississauga Masters began their men’s campaigns with victories. Pooran smashed 64 off 33 balls, including seven sixes, to power Toronto Sixers to a 16-run win over Montreal Royal Tigers, while Wiese featured for Mississauga Masters in their five-wicket victory over Vancouver Kings.
Defending champions Brampton Blitz also began their title defence with a three-wicket win, while Vancouver Warriors Women made a winning start to the expanded women’s competition with a seven-wicket victory over Toronto Sixers Women.
Brampton Blitz had to work for their first points of the tournament, chasing down 89 against White Rock Warriors to win by three wickets. The defending champions reached 90/7 in nine overs after the Warriors mounted a spirited challenge, giving Brampton an early test as they began their bid to retain the title.
Pooran’s 64 came in a match that also featured several established international names, with Kieron Pollard, Andre Russell and Chris Lynn part of the Toronto Sixers and Montreal Royal Tigers contest. The West Indies batter’s seven sixes helped Toronto post 110/7 before restricting Montreal to 94/9.
Mississauga Masters then rounded off the men’s action with a five-wicket victory over Vancouver Kings. Chasing 136, the Masters reached 141/5 in 9.3 overs, with Wiese joined in the line-up by Sikandar Raza and Colin Munro.
The women’s competition also began in the expanded second season, with Vancouver Warriors Women defeating Toronto Sixers Women by seven wickets. The tournament features a mix of established international players and emerging Canadian talent, with Marizanne Kapp, Fatima Sana and Bess Heath among the international names involved.
Beyond cricket, Punjabi singer Josh Brar performed at BC Place, adding to the tournament’s combination of cricket, music and fan entertainment. Canadian pop duo Crash Adams is scheduled to perform on September 30 as the action continues.
