NZ vs IND: India's strongest playing XI for 1st T20I against New Zealand - Predicted
Bhuvneshwar Kumar returns to India’s T20I setup.
India are preparing for another important T20I assignment as they travel to New Zealand for a five-match series. The first match will be played at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on October 22. Both teams will look to start the series with a win and build momentum for the matches ahead.
The visitors recently played a five-match T20I series against West Indies at home. After the final match was washed out, the series ended in a draw (2-2). The Men in Blue will now look to perform better in overseas conditions and make a strong start to the New Zealand tour.
The two teams last met in the T20 World Cup 2026 final, where India defeated New Zealand to defend their title. However, conditions will be different this time, with New Zealand expected to use their home advantage.
The Men in Blue will also be without two key T20I players, Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya. The team will need to make the right choices in its bowling attack, especially with pace and bounce expected to play a role in Christchurch.
India’s Strongest Playing XI for 1st T20I
Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere
The visitors have several options available, but the team may prefer a balanced combination with enough batting depth and pace bowlers. Here’s the strongest possible playing XI for the first T20I.
India’s predicted playing XI:
Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (WK), Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer (C), Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakravarthy.
Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson to Open
Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson are likely to continue as India’s opening pair. Both batters can score quickly in the powerplay and put pressure on the opposition bowlers. Ishan Kishan could bat at No. 3, giving visitors another attacking option at the top.
Captain Shreyas Iyer is expected to bat at No. 4, followed by Tilak Varma. Both players will play a key role in keeping the innings on track if India lose early wickets.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s return strengthens India’s bowling
Bhuvneshwar Kumar is likely to be an important part of India’s bowling attack after returning to the T20I side after nearly four years. His ability to swing the new ball could be useful in New Zealand conditions.
Arshdeep Singh can provide support with the new ball and at the death. Having regained his fitness, Varun Chakravarthy is another option; however, given the conditions, India might also consider an extra fast bowler.
Nitish Kumar Reddy, Shivam Dube and Axar Patel can provide balance with both bat and ball. However, India’s spin options may not be as effective as they are in Asian conditions. The team could therefore consider a pace-heavy attack in the opening match.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is another player to watch, but he may have to wait for his opportunity, with Abhishek and Sanju expected to open.
