Kane Williamson’s 133* helped New Zealand seal a place in the final in the Pakistan ODI tri-series.

Former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson slammed a brilliant century in a tall run chase against South Africa during their encounter in the ongoing ODI tri-series in Pakistan.

Chasing a target of 305 runs in Lahore, Williamson formed a huge partnership of 187 runs with opener Devon Conway for the second wicket, New Zealand’s highest for any wicket against South Africa and the third-highest second-wicket stand for the Kiwis in ODI cricket.

While Conway got out for 97, Williamson maintained his composure under pressure and stayed till the end to seal the chase and New Zealand’s place in the final of the tri-series.

Williamson remained unbeaten on 133 runs off 113 balls, with nine fours and a six. The Black Caps won the match by six wickets and with eight balls to spare.

During the course of his century against South Africa in Lahore, Williamson reached the landmark of 7000 ODI runs.

He became the second-fastest batsman to complete 7000 ODI runs, reaching there in 159 innings. Former South African opener Hashim Amla has got there quicker than Williamson, in 150 innings. Williamson did it in two innings quicker than India’s Virat Kohli.

Fastest to 7000 ODI runs:

  1. Hashim Amla – 150 innings
  2. Kane Williamson – 159 innings
  3. Virat Kohli – 161 innings
  4. AB de Villiers – 166 innings
  5. Sourav Ganguly – 174 innings

Bagging the Man of the Match award, Williamson said, “The conditions were brilliant. Today was a good effort. South Africa did great to get to 300 after a difficult start, we had to work hard to chase this down. We just got to keep going to different venues so we need different things. Today was the early start which needed different preparation. It will all help us prepare for the Champions Trophy. (Comparing his hundred to Phillips’) He is a lot stronger than me, so we do things differently. We had to build partnerships to chase a score like that. Conway played well, and it was a great team effort.”
