Pat Cummins rates Edgbaston win as "Number one" in his test career

Pat Cummins scored 44 off 73 deliveries in the 4th innings in Australia's way to beat England in the first Ashes 2023 test.

Australian captain Pat Cummins will remember the first Ashes test at Edgbaston for his lifetime. Cummins hit the winning runs to wash away the disappointment of Ashes 2005, where Michale Kasprowicz and Brett Lee had a disappointing end of the game and Australia lost by just 2 runs. Pat Cummins added 55 runs in 72 balls along with off-spinner Nathan Lyon to chase down 281 against England and go 1-0 up in the Ashes 2023. Captain Cummins and Lyon both held their nerves when Australia were 8 wickets down and they were 54 runs away from the target. Pat Cummins said that the Edgbaston test win will be the top winning moment in his entire career.

Cummins's Number one test win

Talking about Edgbaston's win Cummins said, “This is No. 1 yeah, absolutely, Start of an Ashes series, definitely number one. Probably when we got down to 10 runs or so required or maybe 16 runs or something, I thought like 2 runs an over and felt pretty confident about winning it felt like from almost the first session of day one. I was 50/50 the whole way along. Like it never felt like it swung too far, one way or the other”. Cummins was wicketless in the first innings but he bounced back and picked up 4 in the second innings. Cummins made useful contributions with the bat in both innings, scoring 38 in the first and remained unbeaten on 44 in the 2nd.

The Australian captain also talked about the crowd support England got, he said that Australians have been outnumbered. England fans made their roars echo on all five days of the test. The crowd also mocked Australian players with their usual chants. Usman Khawaja smashed a century in the first innings and helped Australia finish close to England's score. He also batted superbly in the 2nd innings and scored 65 runs. Khawaja was adjudged Player of the Match for his batting performance in the test. The next Ashes test will begin on 28th July at The Lord’s.
